| In
2001, the total installed photovoltaic capacity is estimated
to be 33.6 MWp. 90% was dedicated to remote applications,
just over a third of which were domestic. Source: IEA PVPS.
Two thirds was dedicated to remote application, 25% to domestic
off grid and 10% to water pumping. Source:

| Photovoltaic
production capacity is made up of conventional silicon production
by BP Solar, which has a plant in Sydney with a capacity of
10 MW. Thin film crystalline silicon technology is in the
pre-production phase at Pacific Solar, with a planned 20MW
capacity. |

Renewable energy consumed as a percentage of total energy
consumed fell slightly between 1977-78 and 1997-98 (from 7
to 6 per cent of primary energy consumed). Of this 0.9% was

has a high dependence on fossil fuels (90%). Household consumption
is project to stabilize at current levels by 2009-10. |
The
total energy used in 1998 (including exports of energy products,
such as black coal and uranium) was 2.8 times the total energy
used in 1978, when the population grew 1.3 times in the same
period. Most of our energy comes from fossil fuels, with oil,
coal and gas providing 94 per cent of energy consumed in Australia:
between 1990 and 1998 Australia's net greenhouse gas emissions
rose by just under 17 percent.
